Outer Sunset is a seaside neighborhood that is close to several major San Francisco Parks and is known for its well-rated schools.

This neighborhood is a part of the larger Sunset District that covers the west side of the peninsula, from the Pacific Ocean to Route 1 and between Golden Gate Park and Lake Merced Park. Of the neighborhoods in the Sunset District, Outer Sunset is one of the most coveted — thanks to its close proximity to the sea.

Getting to Outer Sunset by public transportation is a little easier than from most of San Francisco’s upscale neighborhoods. The light rail runs along Taraval Street in neighboring Parkside. There are also several MUNI buses that serve the neighborhood. By car, getting to the neighborhood is even easier, which is why most residents own a vehicle. The area is easily accessible from Route 1 and Sunset Boulevard, a major tree-lined thoroughfare.

Outer Sunset was mostly uninhabited until the 1917 construction of the Twin Peaks Tunnel allowed for train transit past the rugged mountains in the central peninsula. Locals had actually dubbed the area ‘Outside Lands’ because of its once-isolated feel.

These days, you can still see the remnants of the first homes built here as many still have similar floor plans. The neighborhood historically welcomed Irish and Italian immigrants and later a Chinese-American population moved in.

Outer Sunset is known as one of the foggiest neighborhoods in the city on summer mornings — thanks to its close proximity to the Pacific Ocean.

On weekends, many locals don’t even feel the need to leave the neighborhood as there are plenty of local attractions, including the Golden Gate Park, Ocean Beach, Lake Merced Park and the San Francisco Zoo. Since the neighborhood is so close to the Golden Gate Bridge, many residents drive over to Marin County for quieter beaches and great hiking.

Golfers love the myriad courses in Lake Merced Mark, and dog lovers appreciate the close proximity of Stern Grove Dog Park, an off-leash park that’s 10-plus-blocks long.
